With deep respect & reverence for life, Art for Justice acknowledges that for every individual in prison, a crime was committed. It is essential that our society have a Criminal Justice System that addresses crime in ways that ensure public safety. It is also essential that offenders have access to quality legal services. It is in the interest of all that we have a system of laws that are equitably administered & a Correctional System that is effective &  humane.

Crime: A Personal Experience
Ann Marie Kirk, Director of Art for Justice

I lay on the floor of the bank as my two year old daughter stood in the center of the lobby, screaming. A stocking faced man pointed an AK-47 at her, inches from her head. My daughter was hysterical. Another gunman pushed a pistol against the temple of the pregnant bank teller's head, forcing the woman to collect money. With terrifying ferocity, the man repeatedly hollered, "Shut that kid up!"

We survived that day, but my daughter's reaction to the armed robbery included severe stuttering, panic of loud noises, fear of masks and mimes, and night terrors for the next fifteen years. A month after the incident the same men robbed another bank. This time they killed someone.

The legal system is in place to bring justice to those who commit crime. Incarceration is often necessary. Some people use the trauma suffered by victims of crime to justify supporting programs, policies, and laws that have not been effective in reducing crime. Victims have already been traumatized; they do not need their pain exploited.
